  4. Ausland. It begins with his landing on
  5. Utah Beach on D-Day, carries him through
  6. a number of battles to south of Munich,
  7. and ends with him on his way to the
  8. invasion of Japan. The thread that holds
  9. the book together is his letters to his
  10. parents. It also, however, represents
  11. considerable research, including in the
  12. National Archives. One reviewer described
  13. it as "a beautiful and very moving piece
  14. of writing." To read it, enter BEGIN at
